Marlins (73-74) vs Phillies (66-82)

The Philadelphia Phillies have long since been removed from any playoffs discussion, and they are doing their best to make sure the Miami Marlins are not involved in that conversation as well. After posting a 13-inning triumph in the series opener, the Phillies will look to deal another blow to visiting Miami’s slim playoff aspirations. Guaranteed by manager Pete Mackanin to start each contest of the three-game stand, former National League MVP Ryan Howard belted a solo homer on Friday. This could be the beginning of his swan song in the City of Brotherly Love.

While the Phillies are playing out the string, the Marlins have fallen nine of 17 decisions to their NL East rival and reside five games behind the New York Mets for the second wild card. Giancarlo Stanton walked twice and scored once in his return to the starting lineup. He has struggled hard though when facing off against Saturday starter Jeremy Hellickson, going 1-for-15 with five strikeouts. Marcell Ozuna has collected back-to-back multi-hit performances overall and is 18-for-57 versus the Phillies this season.

Rays (63-84) vs Orioles (81-66)

After watching an eighth-inning comeback bid fall short in the series opener of their four-game set with the Tampa Bay Rays, the Baltimore Orioles finished the job one day later to maintain their grip on a potential postseason berth. The Orioles hope to avoid the need for yet another rally and try to extend their season-long domination of the Rays.

Baltimore surrendered three first-inning runs and seven over the first four innings in Thursday’s 7-6 setback to Tampa Bay, creating just enough of a gap that eighth-inning RBIs from J.J. Hardy and Michael Bourn couldn’t complete the rally. Baltimore fell behind by four runs early Friday as well before eighth-inning RBIs from Hardy and Bourn capped a five-run resurgence and proved to be the difference this time around. This allowed the club to improve to 12-5 against the Rays. The win also allowed the Orioles to stay two games behind division-leading Boston and hold one of the two AL wild-card spots. Tampa Bay saw its three-game winning streak end as a result and stumble to 8-10 since Aug. 29, when it began a 26-game stretch in which it will not play a contest outside of the division.

Twins (55-93) vs Mets (78-69)

While the two teams they are fighting with for the two wild-cards in the National League are playing one another, the New York Mets are strengthening their lineup with a number of injured players set to return. Slugging first baseman Lucas Duda, sidelined for nearly four months, is expected to rejoin the team on Saturday.

New York cruised to a 3-0 victory in the series opener to improve to 9-3 over its last 12 games and remain one game behind San Francisco for the top wild-card spot as well as two games ahead of St. Louis for the final wild-card. Along with Duda, who was out because of a stress fracture in his back, Juan Lagares is back after undergoing thumb surgery and Wilmer Flores should return soon after receiving a cortisone injection in his sore right wrist. Jose Reyes and Asdrubal Cabrera clubbed back-to-back home runs on Friday. Cabrera provided a brief anxious moments when he exited the game in the eighth inning with what turned out to be a leg cramp. Brian Dozier had one of Minnesota’s three singles Friday to prolong his hitting streak to a career-best 20 games.

White Sox (72-75) vs Royals (74-73)

A disastrous homestand has likely buried any chances for the Kansas City Royals to hope of postseason birth. The defending World Series champions have been gouged for 50 runs during that ugly skid. The Royals have dropped to seventh place in the quest for the two wild cards spots and another loss will plunge them back to the .500 mark.

Kansas City’s normally reliable bullpen was unable to maintain a late two-run lead in Friday’s 7-4 loss, giving up five runs over the final two innings. Carlos Sanchez, who delivered a walk-off single for the White Sox on Thursday, smacked a go-ahead three-run home run in the eighth inning Friday. This was his first blast since Sept. 21, 2015. Jose Abreu is now batting .300 after gathering multiple hits in 12 of his last 18 contests.

NFL Fantasy Football News

FanPicks NFL (click & play here) all-time best QB Peyton Manning can finally see his legacy fulfilled after month of being shrouded with controversy.

Peyton Manning is innocent.

After a 7 month NFL investigation on whether former pro-football quarterback Peyton Manning did or did not take performance enhancers, the conclusion announced on Monday that he played the game clean. He did not use any drugs restricted by the league, according to the reports. Taking up on retirement a month after winning his second Superbowl last February, the future Hall of Famer saw his legacy potentially tarnished by a documentary televised by the american broadcast of Al-Jazeera. The program listed out a number of professional athletes around different sport that would have consumed steroids. The name of the former Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos QB was included among them. The NFL found no credible evidence to confirm that the Al-Jazeera claim was valid. The investigation included an examination of Manning’s medical file.

Issue across every sports

Baseball players Ryan Zimmerman and Ryan Howard, who were mentioned on the list of doped athletes, will sue Al-Jazeera America for libel. Manning has, on the other hand, decided not to file suits against them. Green Bay Packers linebackers, Julius Peppers and Clay Matthews, as well as James Harrison from the Pittsburgh Steelers will need to submit explanation to the NFL. Mike Neal, former Packers and currently free agent, has also been summoned by the American Football magna.

Manning illustrious career

Manning had a prestigious career in the NFL. Number 18 wore the Colts colors until 2011. That year, he got sidelined for the season due to a neck injury. In 2012, he joined the Denver Broncos. He holds most of the NFL passing records, like the most touchdown passes (539 TD) and the most passing yards (71,940 yards). Invited 14 times in the Pro Bowl and 7 times within All-Pro First-Team, Manning mainly distinguished himself in 2013. He collected 55 touchdowns during that year, breaking the previous record of 50 held by Tom Brady since 2007 (which Brady broke from Manning’s 49 in 2004). The right-handed quarterback also led the season in passing yards with 5,477 yards. He completed a total of 6,125 of his 9,380 passes in the regular season, while committing 303 interceptions.

  • Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard is set to return to the starting lineup on Tuesday. Tommy Joseph has started the past six games, allowing Howard to “clear his head,” as manager Pete Mackanin put it. Joseph, who was called up May 13, recorded more hits for the month (10) than Howard (7) in 35 fewer plate appearances.
  • Royals center fielder Lorenzo Cain has enjoyed success against O’s pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez, going 8-for-17 (.471) with a home run in his career against the righty.
  • Ryan Braun will seek career hit No. 1,500 with the Brewers.
  • Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman has been reinstated from paternity leave, with the Nationals optioning Trea Turner to Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding move. Zimmerman is expected to be back in the lineup Tuesday.
  • Charlie Blackmon has reached base safely in 32 straight games, good for the second-longest streak in the Majors. It’s the longest streak for the Rockies since Troy Tulowitzki reached safely in 41 straight last season.

Fantasy Baseball MLB Draft Notables

  • Phillies Manager Pete Mackanin said Ryan Howard will return from his brief sabbatical from the Phillies’ lineup during the Cubs series. Tommy Joseph has started the past five games at first. Joseph should start again against Jon Lester on Monday, with Howard reclaiming first base for the final two games.
  • The return to AL play means C.J. Cron, who’s basically splitting time at first base and designated hitter, will return to the Angels’ lineup. Cron has driven in 21 runs over his last 30 games.
  • Gregorio Petit faces his former team this week. Petit mainly played for the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate last season, but he has become the Angels’ starting shortstop with Andrelton Simmons and Cliff Pennington on the disabled list.
  • Starting shortstop Ketel Marte is expected to be activated off the 15-day DL by the Mariners and be in the lineup for the first time since being sidelined May 21 with a sprained left thumb. Seattle is still without center fielder Leonys Martin, who will be out at least until Friday with a strained hamstring.

Philadelphia Phillies 2016 MLB season

Fantasy Baseball Philadelphia Phillies Preview 02-16-2016

FanPicks is proud to bring you this Philadelphia Phillies preview. Come enjoy daily Fantasy Baseball news at Fanpicks.com ahead of the MLB 2016 season.

The Philadelphia Phillies had an extremely tough year last season and had to face an important offseason to enter the 2016 season. They ended with MLB’s worst record (63-99) but the positive note is that they were able to secure the #1 draft pick in the 2016 MLB Draft, a pick they haven’t had since 1998.

Philadelphia Phillies Preview

The biggest news of course was when GM, Ruben Amaro Jr. was ditched by the organization back in September due to the obvious disappointment of the team’s results and poor 2015 campaign.

The Phillies showed during the second half of the past season when they almost posted a .500 record, that a sounder organization-building approach could do them some wonders.

The 3 main players to watch are:

  • Aaron Nola (SP)
  • Maikel Franco (3B)
  • Odubel Herrera (OF)

Nola, 2014 7th pick overall will definitely have a more important role and will be looking for his form of 2 years ago when he entered the majors with a solid season.

Maikel Franco will cast an important role using his power which helped him put up 14 home runs and 50 RBI in just 80 games as a rookie before he broke his wrist.

Herrera will be a steady contributor with his .297 batting average and solid on the steals department hoping for about 30 this upcoming campaign.

After the blockbuster trade involving Cole Hamels, the Phillies will be hoping to bounce back to their potential although it may take a while before they establish themselves back as a powerhouse in the N.L. East, having won before this past campaign, five straight National League East titles.
