American League Division Series

Red Sox vs Indians Game 1

Boston’s David Ortiz makes his last playoff run and starts it against a team managed by Terry Francona, who helped guide Ortiz and the Red Sox to World Series titles in 2004 and 2007. Francona must find a way to work around Ortiz with a pitching staff at less-than full strength when the Cleveland Indians host Boston in Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Thursday (Enter Contests).

About the Red Sox

The Red Sox had a chance to earn homefield advantage throughout the playoffs but closed with five losses in the last six games to drop into third place and make it necessary to travel to Cleveland for Game 1. “Big Papi” went 3-for-20 with one extra-base hit in those six games while being showered with tributes, but the bigger issue for Boston was closer Craig Kimbrel suffering the loss in two of those games and issuing six walks in two total innings over his three appearances. Ortiz (38 home runs, 127 RBIs), Mookie Betts (31, 113) and Hanley Ramirez (30, 111) became the first trio in franchise history to reach 30 homers and 100 RBIs in the same season. The Red Sox took the season series 4-2, winning two of three in Cleveland.

Rick Porcello emerged as an AL Cy Young candidate in the second half and went 8-1 over his final 11 starts, yielding three or fewer earned runs in each of those outings. The New Jersey native had a string of 11 straight starts completing at least seven innings come to an end in his last two starts as he surrendered a total of six runs and 16 hits in 12 1/3 innings against Tampa Bay and Toronto. Porcello earned a home win over Cleveland on May 22 and is 10-4 with a 3.35 ERA in 22 career starts against the Indians.

About the Indians

The Indians’ pitching issues have more to do with health as Carlos Carrasco (fractured finger) will miss the playoffs, Danny Salazar (forearm) is limited to the bullpen and Cy Young candidate Corey Kluber (quad) starts Game 2 on 10 days’ rest. Shortstop Francisco Lindor batted .233 after Sept. 1 and was 6-for-23 against Boston this season.

Trevor Bauer (12-8, 4.26) will get the start. He might have slotted fourth in a fully healthy Cleveland rotation. The right-hander struggled down the stretch with a 7.20 ERA in his last five starts. The lone quality start in that bunch came Saturday, when the UCLA product held Kansas City to three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out nine in six innings. Bauer faced Boston twice this season and allowed a total of six runs with 10 hits in six innings of work.

MLB Primetime Games

September 14, 2016

Join our FanPicks MLB Primetime Games right here.

Pirates vs Phillies

The Pirates will need to provide a little more offense to help their rookie pitcher Steven Brault against the Phillies. The youngster got only five runs from his teammates in his first five big league starts. He drew solid outings in his past three games and looks to continue his stretch on the road. Along with Jameson Taillon and Chad Kuhl, Brault is the third rookie currently in Pittsburgh rotations.

Orioles vs Red Sox

The two best hitting teams will put their best pitchers on the mound in this one. Baltimore will go with Kevin Gausman, who’s received at least five run support in three of his last five start. American League Cy Young contender Rick Porcello will be Boston’s weapon of choice for the matchup. He’s been even more rewarded than his counterpart, getting at least 10 runs support in four of his last five outing.

Marlins vs Braves

Things are not looking good for the Brave today. They will need to contend with one of the hottest pitcher in MLB right now, Jose Fernandez. His most recent performance was phenomenal, as he struck out 14 against the National League West leading Los Angeles Dodgers. it was his third 14 strikeout performance this season. Fernandez has a 3.65 ERA in four career starts at Turner Field. He gave up a career-high 9 runs in his last start at the Ted.

Brewers vs Reds

A sweep of the Brewers could be on the horizon for the Reds at Great American Ball Park. Despite top basestealer Billy Hamilton missing from that matchup for the Reds, second best speedster, Milwaukee’s Jonathan Villar, will be there. Villar has 54 steals this season and is 4 behind Hamilton. The Brewers shortstop is also shredding it with power this season. He posted his 16th home run on Tuesday.

Twins vs Tigers

The Tigers have the opportunity to gain ground in the American League Central and Wild Card Standing, as they continue their series versus the worst team in baseball, the Minnesota Twins. Detroit failed to win against them on Tuesday. It will now be on Anibal Sanchez to bring them to a victory. The hurler is in need of a good outing if he want to stay in the rotation when Jordan Zimmerman comes back from injury.

Athletics vs Royals

This will be the first time that A’s left-hander Sean Manaea will start against the organization that drafted him back in 2013. The Royals, on the other hand, will try to focus and get back into the post-season race. The fell the first two game of the series against Oakland and can’t afford to lose a third. They are trailing the Baltimore Orioles by five games in the American League Wild Card race.

Orioles vs Nationals

 BALvsWAS

The O’s will face tough Nationals righty Tanner Roark, whose 2.87 ERA ranks seventh in the National League. Roark allowed three runs in five innings against the Orioles when he started against them last September.

Angels vs Blue Jays

 LAAvsTOR

Matt Shoemaker will look to win back-to-backstarts for the first time since mid-July when he gets the ball against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. Toronto will counter with Marco Estrada.

Red Sox vs Rays

BOSvsTB

If any team is going to have a chance to beat Boston’s Rick Porcello this season, they’re going to have to do so when the right-hander is on the road. Porcello is 12-0 with a 2.96 ERA at Fenway Park and 5-3 with a 3.49 ERA on the road. A win on Wednesday would make Porcello the Majors’ first 18-game winner this season.

Royals vs Miami

 KCvsMIA

Miami Marlins right-hander Jose Fernandez hopes a return to South Beach will be just what doctor ordered in a bid to cure what has become his worst stretch of the season. Fernandez looks to snap a four-game winless run.

Rangers vs Reds

 TEXvsCIN

In Yu Darvish’s four years in the Majors, the Reds have seen the Rangers starter just once during the regular season, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t some history. Darvish’s lone start came in 2013. He struck out eight over 6 2/3 scoreless innings in a 3-2 Rangers win. But earlier that year, during Spring Training, Darvish acquainted himself with the Reds, specifically first baseman Joey Votto. In the first inning of that game on March 23, Darvish threw Votto a looping eephus pitch, and Votto got all of it, driving it deep into the right-field stands. As Votto rounded the bases, Darvish laughed, and then after Votto touched home, he turned toward the stands behind home plate and put his finger over his lips, shushing the crowd. The Reds first baseman is 9-for-16 with 11 RBIs over the last five games. Darvish and Votto are going to face once again at the Great American Ballpark.

Red Sox has traded for lefty pitcher Drew Pomeranz

First big trade of the season, and it’s Boston who made the move towards stacking for World Series push. The Red Sox acquired all-star left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz from the San Diego Padres in return for right-handed pitching prospect Anderson Espinoza. The deal got finalized Thursday, a day before the end of the all-star break. FanPicks (click to play) resumes it’s contest Friday with primetime contest, which includes the BoSox’ vs Yanks’ rivalry. Come on and play.

Trade breakdown

Padres acquisition, Anderson Espinoza, is 18 years-old and was the 3rd best Red Sox prospect within the organization and the 15th best ranked youngster in the nation according to Baseball America.

As for the Red Sox, they add-in another lefty in their rotation. With David Price and Eduardo Rodriguez, it brings the total of left handed starters to three now with Pomeranz. This acquisition gives Boston a solid pitcher with an 8-7 record with a 2.47 ERA in 17 games this season. Those numbers warranted Pomeranz a place in Tuesday’s All-Star game. He gave up a single to new Boston teammate Jackie Bradley Jr during that game. It was his lone blunder, as he ousted everyone else he faced in that contest which happened to be in San Diego.

To make room for him within the active roster, the Red Sox placed the name of  infielder Josh Rutledge on the 60-day disabled list. Rutledge suffers from tendinitis on his left knee. Along with Pomeranz, Price and Rodriguez, the BoSox’ rotation is completed with Rick Porcello and Steven Wright. And in the exception of Wright and Newly acquired Pomeranz, they all have been inconsistent this season. Injury to elite relief Craig Kimbrel and Junichi Tazawa threatened to put more weight on the starters.

Tazawa, who just got put on the 15-day disabled list, will be replaced by righty William Cuevas from the triple-A squad. The Japanese made 35 presence in relief , posting a 1-1 record and an ERA of 3.62.

MLB Fantasy Predictions

The Boston Red Sox aren’t having any difficulties scoring runs this opening week of the regular season. In fact, the Blue Jays’ shaky bullpen has really helped them and it was quite obvious in their spectacular come from behind win this series opener. They will head into this game hoping to remain productive while handing Toronto a 4th straight defeat. Boston took both games of the series so far, including an 8-7 win last night as well as a 8-4 earlier this afternoon. Their 2nd baseman Dustin Pedroia had a solid game, adding 3 hits and 2 RBI for his team. Wellington Castillo also played well with a 2 for 4 contribution on the mound with a run. Hanley Ramirez is another player of note for the Red Sox. He put up 2 hits and an RBI in Friday’s game while adding 2 more RBI and a triple this afternoon.Steven Wright, the right hander will start tomorrow for Boston and it will be his season debut. Wright had a 5-4 record last year in 9 starts with an 4.09 ERA and 52 Strikeouts.
On the other side, Toronto is using Marco Estrada as their starting pitcher tomorrow. Estrada as well is making his season debut but it will be interesting to see if Estrada is fully healthy for this one as he’s coming back from injury.
The Blue Jays shouldn’t have too much issues scoring especially with big hitters such as Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion, Troy Tulowitzki and Josh Donaldson on their team. So far, only Bautista was able to manage an RBI during Saturday’s game. Donaldson also added Along with Donaldson, Bautista had a pair of hits in that matchup.
Even though the Red Sox are 4-1 in their last 5 Sunday games, and 8-1 in their last 9 against the American League East, the Jays are actually 6-0 in their last 6 games after losing their first 2 games of a series. Toronto also has a 9-3 record on their last 12 Sunday games and are favorite in this one to prevent a sweep.
