The Bulls entered the new year riding the wave of a six-game winning streak and putting the pressure on Cleveland for top spot in the East. They have since dropped three in a row, the latest coming at Milwaukee on Tuesday night where they were felled, 106-101, by the Bucks. Jimmy Butler continued his impressive play this season with 30 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assist, including dropping 10 of 12 from the charity stripe. Butler is averaging 22.2 points for his team this season, far and away their biggest offensive threat. Pau Gasol has 10 point and 14 boards while Derrick Rose had a quiet night with only 9 points as Chicago fall to fourth place in the competitive Eastern Conference, with the Indian Pacers hot on their heels. Rose left the game at various points, including in the third quarter with a bout of patellar tendinitis.
The 76ers dropped another game to the visiting Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday, and although the outcome may never have been in question, they still managed to prevent the best team in the East from completely dominating them as the 95-85 loss was somewhat respectable given the fact that they were outclassed at every position. Rookie Jahlil Okafor was the leading scorer for Philadelphia with 21 points and 7 rebounds, shooting 9-for-15 from the paint. Ish Smith continued to impress since landing with the team in December, recording a double-double with 18 points and 10 assists. In just nine games played with the Sixers, Smith has emerged as the second-leading scorer with the club, averaging 16.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per match-up.

Toronto Raptors vs. Philadelphia 76ers

The Raptors come into this game with a modest two-game road winning streak. The more impressive of those two wins came against the Washington Wizards on Friday. In that game, they got a season-high 35 points from DeMar DeRozan and another double-double from Kyle Lowry. That backcourt has been one of the best in the NBA this season and they truly carry this team nearly every single night. The defense was spectacular in these two road wins as well and that’s been the key to success all season for this Toronto team, as they rank fourth in points allowed. In fact, they have given up 100 or more points in every loss since mid-November, so it’s clear the defense is the major correlation to success for this team. Considering that trend, they look like a good bet to win here, as they face one of the worst offenses in the NBA.
The Sixers are not synonymous with winning, but they are a far better team right now than a couple of weeks ago. Philadelphia has won three of their last seven games and have been playing much more competitively in their losses. That stretch directly correlates with the addition of Ish Smith and he’s been great in his stead with the Sixers. Not only has he been putting up good numbers, Smith has controlled the offense and limited the turnovers for the most turnover prone team in the NBA. Smith has also been doing a great job of reviving Nerlens Noel, who was terrible for the first two months of the season. Toronto comes into this game as a nine-point favorite, but it could be closer then that with the Raptors playing in the second half of a back-to-back here.

Atlanta Hawks vs. Philadelphia 76ers

Losers of three of their last four games, the Hawks have not started 2016 in the same fashion as they ended 2015 (winning six straight) and are once again looking very vulnerable in a fiercely competitive East. Atlanta lost at home to the New York Knicks on Monday night, 107-101, to maintain a tenuous grasp on fifth place in the conference. Although all five starters for the team managed to post scores in the double digits, they still weren’t able to overcome hot scoring performances from their opponents. Paul Millsap led the Hawks with 19 points in the defeat, while Al Horford came just shy of a triple-double, putting in 13 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists. The Hawks rank dead last in the NBA in rebounds, averaging 40.3 per game. Despite their recent struggles, the team remains only a half game behind the first place Miami Heat in the Southeast Division.
It may be difficult to come to terms with, but the Philadelphia 76ers may actually be the hotter team heading into Wednesday’s match-up, having gone 3-3 in their last six outings. Philly bested the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves 109-99 on Monday night and are slowly looking like a somewhat respectable outfit in the process. One of the main reasons for the Sixers recent surge is new team toy Ish Smith, who once again led the way for the team with 21 points, going 9-for-16 from the field, and adding 11 assists. Nerlens Noel and Jahlil Okafor added 10 points apiece, with Noel also contributing 9 rebounds. Since Smith arrived in Philadelphia in December, the team has improved its shooting percentage by over 9 points per game, but still rank last in the league in offense, recording an average of only 92.9 points per contest. The team plays their next five games at home, where they are 2-12.
