Utah has been one of the most solid teams in the NBA despite their 2 game losing streak after the league’s All-Star break. In fact, the Jazz have won 8 of their last 10 games while also holding opponents to one of the lowest total pts in the league. The only real issues they have to fix before playoffs are their offense and road issues. They’re currently 9-17 away from the Vivint Smart Home Arena and rank in the bottom 5 in terms of pts scored and assists. Their obvious strength lies in their defense, allowing just 96 pts per game and ranked 2nd in the league in pts allowed.
The Trail Blazers are also one of the hottest teams in the league right now, not only because they’ve won 9 of their last 10 games but have been beating top competition lately. That culminated on Friday when the defending champion, Golden State Warriors lost by 32 points against them. Damian Lillard dropped a career high 51 pts and it helped them take the 8th seed right in front of the Jazz. This game is extremely important for both teams, as the winner will be sitting in the 8th seed and will have the upper hand in terms of tiebreaker situation.

Fantasy basketball The Jazz have won two of their last three games, but that’s not indicative of their form. Since injuries to Derrick Favors, Alec Burks and Rudy Gobert, the team has really struggled. The bigger worry is on the defensive end, as they have regressed a lot since the injury bug bit them a few weeks back. Their most recent game was a nightmare in which they lost to the San Antonio Spurs, while allowing 122 points on over 60 percent shooting. The one bright spot in that loss is that the starters got to sit in the fourth quarter and rest for this back-to-back. In the first game against Houston, the Jazz lost a nail biter 93-91 and had some poor late game execution.

The Rockets have lost four of their last five coming into this and the defense has been horrendous. They now rank 26th in points allowed and have regularly been allowing 110-plus as of late. It’s hard to put a finger on why the team is so bad defensively with players like Patrick Beverley, Trevor Ariza and Dwight Howard, but they need to do a better job of stopping transition baskets. The resurgence of Howard is a promising sign though, as he is averaging 22.3 points and 13.5 rebounds over his last four games. With Howard playing like this and James Harden putting up the gaudy numbers he is right now, it’s hard to see much improvement with this team unless they fix something on the other end of the floor. With all that said, the Rockets have a good chance to win here as nine-point favorites in this matchup.
