NHL Fantasy Hockey Preview

L.A Kings vs Vancouver Canucks

The Los Angeles Kings will be visiting the Vancouver Canucks Monday night and hope to end their 4 game road losing streak and regain the top spot in the Pacific Division where they trail the Anaheim Ducks by only 1 point with only 4 games remaining. NHL Fantasy Hockey Preview

The Vancouver Canucks are having a nightmare year but have shown some sign of resurgence lately. They’re coming into this game on consecutive wins against the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks, two of the top teams in the Western Conference and of course, in the NHL. Their latest wins actually really helped the Kings who find themselves now 3 pts ahead of the Sharks and 1 pt shy from the Ducks. Jannik Hansen has been playing exceptionally well with a goal and 3 assists in the past 2 games. Their leader, Daniel Sedin is sitting at 28 goals in the year, his highest input since the 2011-2012 campaign. He’s only 1 assist shy of his 587th that will square him up with Paul Kariya in the 89th all time assist leader.

The Kings absolutely need to end their 4 game road skid. They will end their season at home with 2 games but tonight’s matchup is critical and strategic. They’re going for their 2nd division title in the franchise history and it will go down to the wire when they battle the Ducks on Thursday at home. Lucky for them, Jeff Carter has been heating up lately, adding up 3 goals and an assist in the past 2 games and 5 goals and 3 assists in his last 5 contests after going 8 games without a goal. Their captain Dustin Brown needs 3 pts to avoid finishing with less than 30 pts for the 4th consecutive campaign.

Daily Fantasy Hockey Lineup

There are only five games on the NHL schedule tonight, and with the season coming to a close, matchups become even more important when considering your daily fantasy hockey lineup.

Some daily fantasy players like to spread their wealth over an abundance of games, but as some teams are fighting for their playoff lives others are dreaming of greener pastures so effort levels can waver significantly.

In this edition of my daily fantasy hockey lineup, I’ve loaded up on Kings, and Panthers, while rounding out my team with stalwart’s from playoff teams (one exception: Columbus’ hot Boone Jenner)

  • My Lineup

The Tampa Bay Lightning were expected to be contenders this season, but have dealt with their share of drama from the get-go. Captain Steven Stamkos has had a whirlwind season including the non-stop trade rumours due to his status as an impending unrestricted free-agent, while top prospect Jonathan Drouin refused to report to their minor league affiliate for a while leading to an in-house suspension.

Just as Tampa thought that things would turn up in time for the playoffs, those hopes took a major hit when the club announced the loss of Stamkos for one-to-three months with a blood clot this weekend, and top pairing defenseman Anton Stralman with a broken leg last week.

Scoring winger Ondrej Palat missed over 20 games this season due to injury, but has heated up of late going on a tear about a month ago and recently producing 4 goals and 8 assists for 12 points over his last 10 games.

Though the Vancouver Canucks have won two straight, the Kings are still the heavy favorite. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the Canucks hadn’t won one in their previous 10 and LA is true Stanley Cup contender.

Enter a trio of Kings: Jonathan Quick, Jeff Carter and value pick Kris Versteeg.

Jonathan Quick is one of the league’s few elite goaltenders, and is aiming for a career-high 40 wins tonight. He’s at least $1000 cheaper than the St-Louis Blues tandem of Jake Allen (injured) and Brian Elliott, more talented than them and has the desired matchup.

I also stacked two members from the Florida Panthers top line. Aleksander Barkov and Jaromir Jagr. Barkov has made a habit of wrecking the Montreal Canadiens this year, and capped off the season with a 4-point effort (2 goals, 2 assists) on Saturday night. The young Finn is fresh, confident and primed to wreck the Maple Leafs tonight.

Linemate and living-legend Jaromir Jagr has points in 5 straight games, while scoring at least one point in 16 of 21 games since turning 44 years old on February 15th (9 goals, 13 assists). He shows no signs of slowing down heading into the NHL playoffs.

MLB Opening Day Daily Fantasy Lineup

The day is finally here. The major league baseball season is now officially upon us, so Fanpicks is here to present to you our MLB Opening Day Daily Fantasy Lineup.

As everyone is starting off fresh, field players range between the $4800 and $2000 range. Mike Trout is the only exception to the rule at $5000.

Of course, pitchers are the gold mine of the sport ranging anywhere from Clayton Kershaw‘s $11000 cap hit, to Wily Paralta‘s $4300.

I opted for a slightly cheaper David Price instead of big-money Kershaw. The Red Sox new ace has a nice matchup against the not-so potent Cleveland Indians at 1 pm, so I’m looking to start off the season with a bang from my most expensive peice.

Take a look at the rest of my MLB Opening Day Daily Fantasy Lineup.

Bryce Harper is the “highest-paid” bat in my lineup. With a steady dose of up-and-comers, I needed to balance the risk of inconsistency out with a star veteran.

Cincinnati’s Joey Votto was also selected for the same reasons, and a strong spring leads me to believe he may start this season off with a bang.

While he may not have a ton of power, Jason Heyward should be a nice fantasy option this season. He is expected to bat second on Opening Day,  and should remain behind Dexter Fowler, and in front of some combination of Ben Zobrist, Anthony Rizzo, and Kris Bryant, so expect him to score a lot of runs this year.

March Madness

Championship Game

#1 North Carolina vs #2 Villanova Preview

It’s the college basketball game of the year. March Madness is coming to an end, so prepare to feast your eyes on what’s sure to be the game of the year.

North Carolina is a great shooting team, but even when they don’t make the shot they score points. The Tar Heels come down with the best offensive rebounding rate in the UNC rebounds a whopping 39.9 percent of its own missed shots,

The Tar Heels’ three primary big men – All-American Brice Johnson and juniors Kennedy Meeks and Isaiah Hicks – all rank in the top 110 nationally in offensive rebounding percentage among individual players.

UNC, which scores 82.4 points a game, gets 9.6 percent of those points from putbacks, or nearly a 10th of its scoring.

Tar Heels guard Marcus Paige was 3-of-7 from beyond the arc; the rest of the team was 1-of-10 in their Final Four matchup versus Syracuse. That will not be good enough against the red-hot Wildcats on Monday night.

Sharp-shooting Villanova shot 71.4 percent from the field on Saturday against Oklahoma, good for the second-best mark in Final Four history and have drained 58.1% of their shots from the field through their first five games of the tournament. Those stats are both records, set by themselves in 1985 when they won their only national championship.

They’ve also made 49 percent of their 3-pointers since March Madness began.

Another important trait shown by the Wildcats is their killer instinct. They’ve won four of their March Madness games by at least 19 points (Kansas by 5).

The gameplan is simple, turn balls over (72) and make the effective play. They start by looking inside, specifically to big-man Daniel Ochefu, and kick it out for the open trey.

It’s a classic battle between the consensus top team, and a streaking contender.

We’ll soon find out who will reign victorious in 2016.

Final Four Scores

March Madness

Final Four Scores – Armed with a couple of blowouts, the Final Four may not have been as thrilling as the previous rounds, but you won’t anyone complaining about witnessing two quality teams put in work.

Now that the Final Four has come to a close and March Madness is nearing it’s finish, it’s time to reflect upon what has been another great show by our nations best young basketball players. It’s been an exciting run that began with 68 teams competing to be crowned champions, but now only two remain.

Those two teams competed for the right to play in that title game on Saturday, April 2nd.

No. 2 Villanova easily handled No. 2 Oklahoma by a score of 95-51. That 44-point spread was the biggest margin of victory in Final Four history.

Later that evening, North Carolina took care of business against Syracuse and came out on top of an 83-66 score. Syracuse kept it close for most of the game, but UNC was just too dominant down low again.

Villanova has reached the national championship game for the first time since 1985, while North Carolina returns for the first time since 2009.

The March Madness Championship Game takes place on Monday, April 4 2016 at precisely 9:19 PM at NRG Stadium, Houston, Texas.

Final Four

#2 Villanova vs #2 Oklahoma Recap

Final Four Gamecenter Box Score

During Saturday afternoon action, No. 2 Villanova not only beat, but embarrassed No. 2 Oklahoma by a score of 95-51. That 44-point spread was the biggest margin of victory in the history of the Final Four.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 14-point lead by the half, topping 40 points in the first 20 minutes of play alone. Sooners superstar Buddy Hield scored only 9 points the game and was held without a field-goal for virtually the entire second half.  His only three-pointer was on the opening possession of the game.

Josh Hart led Villanova in scoring with 23 points, while Jordan Woodard led Oklahoma with 12 points.

Box Score

No. 1 North Carolina defeated No. 10 Syracuse easily later on that evening in their Final Four matchup, so the Tar Heels await Villanova in the championship game to be played on Monday, April 4 2016 at precisely 9:19 PM at NRG Stadium, Houston, Texas.

MLB Baseball Fantasy Preview

New York Mets vs Kansas City Royals

It’s that time of the year where the highly anticipated MLB season will freshly begin. The New York Mets will be travelling to Kauffman Stadium where they will face the defending MLB Champions, Kansas City Royals. FanPicks is proud to bring you this MLB Baseball Fantasy preview. Come play in our MLB Grand Slam Contest where you can win up to a $1 million this week at FanPicks.

MLB Baseball Fantasy Preview

Edinson Volquez will be the starter for the Royals as they defend World Series championship at the expense of the same New York Mets.

He had a 13-9 record with a 3.55 ERA the past campaign. During the World Series, he actually started the first game and in Game 5 against the Mets. He didn’t earn the wins as the bullpen of the Royals really helped. He was 8-4 on home starts with a .348 ERA.

Greg Holland’s loss as a reliever to the Royals will be compensated by the addition of Joakim Soria. Soria had 24 saves with a 2.53 ERA for the Pirates last year.

Speaking of the Royals’ relievers, the unit is minus Greg Holland, who is now a free agent. That said, the addition of Joakim Soria should soften the blow of Holland’s loss. Soria had 24 saves and a 2.53 ERA for Pittsburgh last season.

Kansas City will be hoping that their offense remains productive on offense. They may lack in power but for some reason, they’ve been mastering in putting the balls in play. They showed it especially against the Mets during the World Series. They were 2nd last in The AL with only 139 runs but 2nd in the major for batting average with runners in scoring position explaining their success.

Matt Harvey will be the starter for the New York Mets this Opening Day.

The Mets have questionably the best rotation in the MLB. Harvey was 13-8 with a 2.71 ERA last season. He made 4 playoffs appearance last year and went 2-0 with a 3.04 ERA. Harvey has a 5-5 record on 12 road starts last year with a 3.42 ERA.

For their offensive weapons, the Mets can count on the bats of Yoenis Cespedes, David Wright and Curtis Granderson. Cespedes arrived during the middle of the season in New York after a trade and literally transformed the Mets’ offense into a feared one. His 17 home runs in 57 games were quite impressive. He was very calm in the World Series going 3 for 17 only.

Portland Trail Blazers vs Golden State Warriors

Daily Fantasy Basketball Projections

Stephen Curry’s record breaking Golden State Warriors (41-36) will try to push their season record and march towards victory # 73 when hosting Sunday night, the Portland Trail Blazers (41-36) in Oakland at the Oracle Arena. Daily Fantasy Basketball Projections

Golden State are on the brink of becoming the best NBA team ever but however hit a speed bump in their most recent game. They lost at home on Friday night against the Boston Celtics to halt their 54 game home winning streak. Surprisingly, Stephen Curry had the worst game of his season and committed 9 turnovers. He also missed an open 3 pt shot at the end of the game to tie it. They’re still headed for their second straight season leading record and most likely the best record in the NBA even if they drop only 1 game in the next 6, goals are still limitless for the Warriors though, as they are a 5-1 finish away from having the best record in NBA history. They will most likely avenge their loss against the Celtics.

The Trail Blazers are coming into this game winning Portland comes into this game on a 4 game winning streak and it couldn’t come at a better time. They ‘re currently on a 4 game winning streak and it couldn’t come at a better time. They’re now only 1 game away from the 5th place in the West. The Memphis Grizzlies are on slope and continue to fall down the ranks. What’s impressive is that their last 2 wins have come against elite teams from the East. With Damian Lillard setting his career high 52 pts in a win earlier this year against Golden State, look for him to have a great game this campaign.

March Madness

#10 Syracuse vs #1 North Carolina

March Madness Syr vs NC

The Final Four is over and done with for another year, and the championship game is nearly upon us.

It may not have been as frantic as some of the Elite Eight games we had earlier this week, but Syracuse was a scrappy team that gave it their all. Some may have thought the Orange had a shot at an upset, but #1 North Carolina entered March Madness as a top seed for a reason.

UNC is the 24th preseason #1 team to reach the title game. 14 of the previous 23 teams have gone on to win the March Madness championship.

A late run had Syracuse within single digits, but ultimately the Tar Heels proved to be too much down low. NC shot 4-of-17 for three, but 31-for-48 from the field.

At one point, NC superstar forward Brice Johnson was on the bench after a second foul, but that didn’t slow down the boys in blue. UNC went on to outscore Syracuse by a score of 32-12 over that nine minute span and stretch their lead from two to 11.

Sryacuse’s Trevor Cooney lead all scorers with 22 points, while every North Carolina starter other than guard Joel Berry scored in double-digits. Johnson and Justin Jackson had 16 points each, with Johnson adding nine rebounds to boot.

#1 North Carolina will face #2 Villanova in the March Madness championship game on Monday, April 4th.

NFL Mock Draft

The NFL Draft is now just 25 days away, so it’s about time I post my first NFL mock draft. This edition has no trades, and as always, there will be changes going forward.

If you’re wondering why there’s only 31 picks this year, no I did not forget one, but you will recall there was this big thing about deflated footballs a while ago. So, the Patriots will be forfeiting their first-round pick for breaking the league rules (again…).

Let’s take a look at my NFL mock draft, edition numero uno.

Speaking of uno, Laremy Tunsil holds it down at the number one spot. The Ole Miss Tackle had a terrific showing at his pro day, and will help solidify a Titans front-five that will ground and pound with new lead back DeMarco Murray all day.

Carson Wentz has been linked to Hue Jackson for months, but don’t count Goff out just yet. All season long he was the consensus number one quarterback, and now the small school Carson Wentz has jumped the more polished Cal product.

Arguable top overall prospect Jalen Ramsey slides to three because he’s a DB. The Chargers have the young and talented Jason Verrett at corner, but lost long-time leader and safety Eric Weddle. Ramsey will immediately improve the defense, wherever it is the Chargers will be playing in 2016.

  • My entire NFL Mock Draft

Important Note

LA Rams – Taking Paxton Lynch at 15 seems crazy, but no other position will impact this franchise as much as a quarterback.

Even one who’s not necessarily ready for the pro game.

They were practically running a wildcat offense based off the threat of a permanent option call to Tavon Austin on the reverse, or a run up the middle by Todd Gurley. The faith shown in their QB’s down the stretch was as minimal as I’ve ever witnessed in the NFL, and I think that’s more telling than anything. When the coaching staff was forced to put Foles or Keenum in a passing situation where they needed to make the play, they failed miserably… Time and time again.

Maybe the Rams trade up and snatch Goff so he can stay in Cali, but without a trade scenario in this mock I’m improving their chances of winning games by upgrading the most important position on the team.

Denver Broncos – With Colin Kaepernick apparently just a matter of a “few dollars’ away from joining the Broncos, a QB was no longer coveted in the first round. Denver takes advantage of the DL depth in this draft and snatches a nice value at 31. Spence could go much higher, but questions about his speed (4.8 combine) and character are a legitimate concern.

Feel free to comment if you have any suggestions, or even your own NFL Mock Draft to share!

Fantasy MLB Baseball Preview

Toronto Blue Jays vs Tampa Bay Rays

It’s that time of the year where the highly anticipated MLB season will freshly begin. With not major changes made during the off season, the Toronto Blue Jays will be traveling to Tampa Bay to face the Rays. FanPicks is proud to bring you this Fantasy MLB Baseball preview. Come play in our MLB Grand Slam Contest where you can win up to a $1 million this week at FanPicks.

Fantasy MLB Baseball preview

The 2016 campaign starts for the Toronto Blue Jays this Sunday, when they put their healthier Marcus Stroman to the mound for the first game of a3 game series with Tampa Bay.

Stroman only had 4 appearances last season because of an ACL injury but was undefeated with a 1.67 ERA. He returned this postseason with 3 starts on a 4.19 ERA. With David Price gone to the Red Sox, Stroman will have his starring role in the Blue Jays’ rotation.

The Blue Jays are still going to rely on their offense regardless of their pitching staff. They were terrorizing the plate last year and led the league in HR (232), runs scored (891), slugging % (.457) and on-base percentage (.797)

Josh Donaldson will be teaming up once more with his mates Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion to pace their offense  as they combined last season for 120 HR and 937 RBIs.

Justin Smoak however isn’t much of a hitter compared to the others but is a .316 career batting avg against the Ray’s starter Chris Archer.

The Jays are 7-3 in their last 10 games against the Rays.

On the Rays side, there hasn’t been lots of changes over the offseason but they always remained competitive despite lacking established stars in their lineup.

Archer will be on the mound Sunday against a solid Blue Jays line. He’s proven before that he can handle Toronto’s offense in his young career as he held the Blue Jays in his career to .174 against him. Also, the heavy hitters trio of Donaldson, Bautista, and Encarnacion are only 12 for 86 (.139) against Archer. If Archer can neutralize them again this Sunday, it will be a huge plus for the Rays, who don’t have a firepower that can match Toronto’s offense. They actually had a .245 Batting Avg at home last season, the 3rd worst in the majors.

Tampa Bay was just 25th last season in the MLB in runs (644), but were 14th in slugging % (.406).

Logan Forsythe and Evan Longoria will have to carry without a doubt the bulk of the Rays’ with some help of their newcomer Corey Dickerson, who hit .304 with 10 HR last year for the Rockies.

Tampa Bay is 6-4 in its last 10 home games against Toronto.

Toronto Raptors vs San Antonio Spurs

Basketball Fantasy preview

Two of the league’s top teams will meet tonight in San Antonio as the Toronto Raptors travel west to face the San Antonio Spurs at the AT&T Center. The Spurs are still on the verge of history and will try to remain undefeated at home this year. FanPicks is proud to bring you this Basketball fantasy preview. Come play in our NBA Magic Million contest where you can win up to a $1 million this week at FanPicks.

Basketball Fantasy preview

The San Antonio are still standing tall and remain undefeated at home with a 38-0 record. They come into this game having dropped the visiting New Orleans Pelicans Wednesday. They had a lot of contribution coming from the bench with 20 pts from Manu Ginobili. Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green both finished the game with 16 pts, with Leonard adding 6 rebounds and Green going 4 of 6 from 3 point range. Green has only missed 2 games for San Antonio this season, and averages 7.4 pts with 3.9 boards per game. Big man LaMarcus Aldridge added 11 pts and 6 boards as they look destined to finish their season with the number 2 seed in the Western Conference. The Spurs  will still face first place Golden State Warriors twice in their remaining seven games.

The Raptors have won 2 straight games and are having a historical success this season. Their latest win came against the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night. With 27 points coming from their star DeMar DeRozan, he led the Raps in scoring, shooting 8 of 17 from the field. Kyle Lowry added 22 points and Jonas Valanciunas had a double-double with 11 pts and 14 boards. Valanciunas leads the team in boards over 54 games averaging 9.2 per game. The Raptors will enter the playoffs as the 2nd seed in the Eastern Conference since most likely the Cavaliers will take the 1st seed.

Daily Fantasy Hockey Value Picks

It’s a relatively light Saturday schedule for the NHL today, as only 16 teams will be taking to the ice for action. There will be five puck-drops at 7 pm ET, one at 8 pm ET, and two more at 10 pm ET to close things out.

As usual, we’re here to provide you with a little extra nudge when assembling your roster, so take a glance at our daily fantasy hockey value picks below to help make your squad a winner!

Daily Fantasy Hockey Value Picks

G Garret Sparks TOR $6500 – The Red Wings are 5-5 in their last 10, including a 1-0 loss to these same Maple Leafs (Mar. 13), a 4-3 loss to the lowly Montreal Canadiens, and a 7-2 shellacking courtesy of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Of course there’s the flip side to all this. Jimmy Howard is an option at $6700 if you see this as an opportunity for Detroit to break-out, but goaltending is right at the top of the list of reasons for their struggles over the past month so proceed with caution.

G Cam Talbot EDM $6700 – As I stated earlier this week, “The Flames are merely a flicker on the road” moments before Calgary took to the ice for an 8-3 loss to the Anaheim Ducks. Now, the Oilers are certainly no Ducks, but Calgary’s road record speaks for itself (12-24-3). Edmonton is considerably better at home (though it’s still nothing to brag about; 18-19-2), and Connor McDavid will produce tonight. The rookie phenom just had a seven game scoring streak snapped, and hasn’t gone more than two consecutive games without registering a point all season.

D Niklas Kronwall DET $3700 –  Kronwall has returned to form since being activated off the injured-reserve on February 23rd. Detroit’s defensive leader has scored 7 points in his last 10 contests, and has collected assists in three straight.

RW Jaromir Jagr FLA $6300 – The grizzled super-vet posted 15 points in March alone, including a point-per-game over his last 10 games. The Panthers are home to the Canadiens who are coming off a 3-0 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Mike Condon is getting the start for the Habs again, and rarely does he play two strong games in a row. Florida has a nice opportunity here, especially since Joel Hanley is penciled in as the Canadiens number four defenseman this evening.

C Riley Sheahan DET $3600 – I’m aware I put Garret Sparks in the value column, but Sheahan’s recent production cannot be denied. The Red Wings centerman has four goals in his last 5 games, after only recording nine in his first 72.  That price tag is a hell of a steal when considering Sheahan has the same amount of goals as Henrik Zetterberg (13).
