Two teams with very different offensive styles meet Dec. 29 as Air Force takes on California in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas. Air Force’s ground game ranks third nationally with 321.8 rushing yards per game, while Cal boasts an explosive aerial attack led by junior quarterback Jared Goff, who broke his own single-season school records for passing yards and touchdowns. The teams are meeting for the first time since the 2007 Armed Forces Bowl, when the Golden Bears overcame a 21-point deficit and escaped with a 42-36 victory.
Cal won two of its final three games to secure its first postseason appearance since 2011, while Air Force won five straight to clinch the Mountain West Mountain Division title but fell 27-24 to San Diego State in the conference championship game. The Falcons’ triple-option offense has received a boost from tailback Jacobi Owens, who started the final seven games and rushed for a season-best 156 yards against San Diego State. The Golden Bears also will need to keep a close eye on senior quarterback Karson Roberts, who has rushed for nine touchdowns and thrown for nine others.
All five of Air Force’s losses came away from home this season, but it should have solid backing in Fort Worth, which is less than a 12-hour drive from Colorado Springs. Safety Weston Steelhammer recorded a team-high 80 tackles and five interceptions as well as 10.5 tackles for loss and seven pass breakups to lead the Falcons, who ranked third in the Mountain West in scoring defense at 23.2 points per game. Steelhammer will need another strong effort against the Golden Bears, who closed the regular season with a 48-46 home win over Arizona State.
California Season Overview (7-5, 4-5 Pac-12): Linebacker Hardy Nickerson recorded a team-high 101 tackles for the Golden Bears, who will be hard-pressed to slow down the Falcons’ running game after ranking 11th in the Pac-12 with 203.5 rushing yards allowed per game. Running back Daniel Lasco, wide receiver Kenny Lawler and safety Damariay Drew each battled injuries late in the regular season, but all three starters should be available against Air Force. Goff, who is expected to bypass his senior year and declare for the NFL draft, has thrown for a school-record 90 career touchdowns and had 4,252 passing yards and 37 TDs against 13 interceptions this season.
Air Force Season Overview (8-5, 6-2 Mountain West): The Falcons’ run-oriented offense is engineered by Roberts, who averaged 111.2 rushing yards and was sacked only twice all season.
Senior defensive end Alex Hansen earned First-Team All-Mountain West honors with 7.5 sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss, but the defense allowed an average of 33 points over the last four games. The Falcons’ secondary was impressive in wins over Fresno State and Hawaii but struggled against a top-rated quarterback on Sept. 19, when Michigan State’s Connor Cook threw for 247 yards and four touchdowns in a 35-21 victory.
Chicago Bears versus San Diego Chargers Monday Night Football Fantasy Picks 11-9-2015
The San Diego Chargers are home for Monday Night Football as they battle the Chicago Bears. Daily fantasy sports GMs can tune to ESPN TV on November 9th at 8:30PM Eastern Time to track the results of their roster cash league picks.
The Chicago Bears are sitting at 2-5 as they make the road trip out west to face San Diego. Their secondary blew a late lead at home to Minnesota last week as they gave up two big critical passing plays in the final minutes of their 23-20 defeat. Chicago gives up 10 points late. The team has a two game losing streak entering play. The Bears are running the football better in 2015 as they are looking for a bit more balance on offense than in previous seasons. They took a blow as they will be without impact running back Matt Forte and wide out Eddie Royal on Monday night. Offensively Chicago is gaining 333 yards per game which is 27th and near the bottom of the league.
San Diego has hit a critical point of the season with a record of 2-6. There is little margin for error in their final eight games of the season if they are to be a playoff team. Like the Bears the Chargers are struggling defensively as they give up 28.4 points a game which is 27th in the league. On offense the team is simply just one dimensional as they rely heavily on the arm of quarterback Phillip Rivers. San Diego is the top passing team in the NFL but sit 30th in the league in rushing. Opposing defenses has put heavy pressure on Rivers since they have no respect for San Diego on the ground. The Chargers enter play with an impact injury as well as their top wide receiver Keenan Allen is out with a kidney injury for the season. Allen had 725 receiving yards and four touchdown catches this year.
Chicago Bears QB:
The Bears veteran signal caller is hitting on 61.8% of his throws for 1442 yards with eight touchdowns and four picks. He threw for a touchdown and 211 yards last week in the loss to Minnesota. Three weeks back at Detroit Cutler had 353 yards with a touchdown and pick in the loss to the Lions.
Chicago Bears RB:
With Matt Forte out it will be Jeremy Langford getting the start in the Bears backfield. The rookie running back has 27 carries on the year for 80 yards with two touchdowns. He is running for 3.0 yards a carry. In the passing game Langford has two catches for 31 yards.
Chicago Bears WR:
Jeffery has been hit with injuries this year and has played in three games. He has 23 catches for 341 yards with two touchdowns. The wide out had 10 catches last week at home to the Vikings for 116 yards and a touchdown. He has over 100 yards receiving and a touchdown reception in his past two games.
San Diego Chargers QB:
Phillip Rivers is a fantasy football draft manager’s dream as the San Diego Chargers focus much of their offense on his passing. Rivers is passing for 2753 yards with 18 touchdowns and seven picks on the campaign. He has thrown for over 300 yards in five straight games and has multiple touchdown throws in each one. Rivers completed 75.7% of his throws last week at Baltimore for 301 yards with three touchdowns and no picks.
San Diego Chargers RB:
The rookie running back has 103 carries for 382 yards with no touchdowns. Gordon is running for 3.7 yards a carry on the year. Last week at Baltimore Melvin Gordon rushed for 54 yards on 18 carries.
San Diego Chargers WR:
The 34 year old wide receiver has 21 receptions for 409 yards with three touchdowns. He is averaging 19.5 yards a catch this year. Floyd had a big game last week at Baltimore with four receptions for 92 yards and two touchdowns.
