A win by the Flyers would go a long way toward cementing that future post-season confrontation. The Flyers and Detroit Red Wings have 87 points each, but Philadelphia has the edge in the race for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the East because they’ve played fewer games than the Red Wings. Detroit’s 3-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday gave the orange and black a chance to have its first lead in the race for the final spot. Goalie Steve Mason will be a big part of the team effort for the push. It will be his seventh straight start and 12th in the last 13 games. He said that he feels energized, and his numbers definitely bear that out. In his past 11 contests, he’s 7-2-2 with a 1.97 goals-against average and .929 save percentage. Mason allowed two goals or fewer in five straight games and seven of the past 11.
The Capitals could progress to some changes toward the upcoming match-up. Forward T.J. Oshie sat out the early skating session and coach Barry Trotz said that he would be a game-time decision. Oshie missed the final 3:26 of a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday. Washington already clinched the Presidents’ trophy, so Trotz might give some rest to some of his banged up players before the end of regular-season. Regardless of who will play or not, this confrontation could be just what the Capitals need as they prepare to ramp up into playoff mode.
