The Boston Red Sox open up this series with a record of 47-59 and trails the New York Yankees in the AL East by 14 games in the loss column. Boston had a three game win streak stopped on Sunday with a 4-3 home defeat to Tampa Bay. The Red Sox pitching has been poor for much of the season as the club is 27th in Team ERA (4.52) and 26th in WHIP (1.36).

The New York Yankees have been a surprise as they sit atop the AL East with a 59-45 record. They are seven games in the loss column ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays for first place in the division. After a 12-3 road win at the White Sox on Sunday the Yankees have won six of their past nine games. The Yankees bats have carried the club to the top of the division. New York is second in the league in runs scored at 4.92 per game and second in the league in homers with 142 season to date. The starting pitching has been lacking as the club sits 27th in Major League baseball with just 43 quality starts on the year.

Boston Red Sox SS: Xander Bogaerts leads the everyday players with a hitting average of .319 with three homers and 51 RBIs. He is red hot as Bogaerts is batting .345 over the past seven days.

Boston Red Sox 2B: Brock Holt has earned an everyday player status as he is batting .284 with two homers and 26 RBIs. He has hits in five of his past six games with multiple hits in three of those games.

Boston Red Sox LF: Hanley Ramirez is batting .266 with 19 homers and 51 RBIs. He is coming off a two hit game on Sunday against Tampa Bay.

Boston Red Sox 3B: Pablo Sandoval is hitting .260 with eight homers and 34 RBIs. Sandoval has played well against the Yankees with a .349 batting average.

Boston Red Sox DH: David Ortiz has put up some good power numbers on the year with 20 homers and 59 RBIs. He is hitting just .246 on the year.

Boston Red Sox 1B: Mike Napoli has hit poorly against the Yankees with a .152 batting average. He is on a 1 for 9 slump and batting just .207 on the season with 13 homers and 40 RBIs.

Boston Red Sox P: Henry Owens makes his debut for the Red Sox on Wednesday. At Triple “A” Pawtucket Owens was 3-8 with an ERA of 3.16 in 21 starts.

New York Yankees LF: Brett Gardner has hit well at home with a .320 average with eight homers and 27 RBIs. Against Boston this year Gardner is hitting .318 with 10 RBIs.

New York Yankees DH: Alex Rodriguez has performed well in 2015 hitting .277 with 24 homers and 61 RBIs. He is batting .333 against the Red Sox with three homers and 10 RBIs.

New York Yankees 3B: Chase Headley is coming off a three hit game on Sunday. He has five multiple hit games over his past eight games. He is another Yankee who is hitting Red Sox pitching with a .306 batting average with two homers.

New York Yankees 1B: 35 year old Mark Teixeira has put up some very good power numbers with 29 homers and 74 RBIs. He is batting .364 over the past seven days with five homers.

New York Yankees SS: Didi Gregorius has his average up to .250 with five homers and 32 RBIs. He is hitting .480 the past seven days.
