The New York Yankees enters the series just three games back of the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East division race. After undergoing a five game losing streak the Yankees have won three of their past four games. In the AL Wildcard race the Yankees sits with a five game lead over the Minnesota Twins who sits in the third spot. The Yankees have been driven into a playoff contending team by their offense. The club is second best in runs scored (4.85) and is third in home runs (193). The starting pitching has been inconsistent and the staff is 22nd on the year in quality starts (65).
The New York Mets have made good moves at the All Star break to bring in much needed offense to spark the club and support their great starting pitching staff. As they enter this series with the Yankees the Mets hold a seven game lead in the loss column over the second place Washington Nationals with 16 games remaining to be played. After an eight game win streak the Mets have lost two straight losing two games in the standings to the Nationals. The pitching for the Mets has been phenomenal. The staff ranks fourth in Team ERA (3.45), second in WHIP (1.18) and second best in the league in quality starts (93).
