In its 2nd year of existence, the Rising Star Challenge saw Team USA top Team World in a nailbiter 157-154 with plenty of highlight reel action.
Defending Slam Dunk Contest champion Zach Lavine from the Minnesota Timberwolves shined throughout the night and was named MVP of the event with his 30 pts performance.
His teammate and Canadian-native Andrew Wiggins also had an excellent game with 29 pts and many highlight-reel dunks for Team World.
Team World’s Kristaps Porzingis had a strong performance with 30 pts and some strong dunks while Emmanuel Mudjay also added 30 pts with 10 assists.
For most of the fans in attendance, last year’s #1 overall draft pick Wiggins and hometown hero was really the star attraction and received many chants and ovations all throughout the night.
The Rising Stars game is a good show for the fans prior to the skills competition and actual All-Star Game, spotlighting the new talent in the league and giving hope of better days to long suffering franchises such as the Timberwolves, the Bucks or the Knicks.
All-Star Celebrity Game
In an entertaining matchup Friday night, Coach Drake’s Team Canada defeated their southern rivals Team USA coached by the comedian Kevin Hart, 74-63.
Tracy McGrady led the charge for the Canadians with 18 pts while Arcade Fire’s Win Butler took the MVP honors with his 15 pts.
Jason Sudeikis led Team USA with 14 points in the game. The Americans got some unexpected help in the second half when their head coach and 4 time Celebrity MVP award recipient, Kevin Hart, inserted himself in the lineup but it didn’t prove enough in the end.
