Washington Nationals are Making Moves in the NL East Division Race

With their 9-4 home victory on Sunday over the Atlanta Braves, the Washington Nationals have moved within four games of the first place New York Mets. The Nationals have been picking on the hapless Braves as they swept a four game series over the weekend. Atlanta scored a grand total of nine runs in all the four contests. The Nationals bullpen bailed out another poor outing by starter Joe Ross. The Washington bullpen pitched 4 2/3rd scoreless innings of relief on Sunday.

Bryce Harper:

The Nationals MVP candidate is coming off a two hit game on Sunday. He has crushed Braves pitching going 7 of 11 in the series. He has multiple hits in three straight games. He walked four times in Game 1 on Thursday and scored a run each time. On the year Harper is hitting .339 with 34 homers and 83 RBIs.

Yunel Escobar:

Escobar has crushed Braves pitching as well by going 8 for 16 in the four game series. His power numbers have slid with just one extra base hit over his past nine games. Escobar is batting .315 on the year with nine homers and 46 RBIs.

Michael Taylor:

The Nationals center fielder had a two hit game with two RBIs on Sunday. He entered the game on a 3 for 13 slump.

Joe Ross:

Ross lasted just 4 1/3rd innings on Sunday as he gave up four earned runs and five hits with three walks. He has walked nine batters in his past two starts working a total of seven innings. Ross has failed to pitch five innings in four of his past six starts.

Mets Drop a 4-3 Decision at Miami on Sunday. They lose two of three over the weekend.

The New York Mets dropped a 4-3 road decision at the Miami Marlins on Sunday. With the Braves sweeping the Nationals the Mets gave up two games from their NL East lead at the conclusion of this series with the Marlins. The Mets bullpen gave up single runs in the eighth and ninth inning to blow a 3-2 lead late.

Yoenis Cespedes:

The Mets center fielder had a two hit game on Sunday. Cespedes is batting .421 for the month of September. He has multiple hits in four of his past five games.

Michael Conforto:

The left fielder had a two hit game on Sunday. Conforto has multiple hits in four of five games and six of his past ten. His average is now up to .300 with five homers and 18 RBIs.

Wilmer Flores:

The shortstop had a home run on Sunday. He is batting .333 for the month of September for the Mets.

Steven Matz:

Matz made his third start of the year on Sunday and allowed two earned runs and four hits pitching 5 1/3rd innings. He received a no decision on Sunday.

LA Dodgers Exit San Diego Series with a 7 ½ Game Lead Over San Francisco

LA has won three straight and six of their past seven games as they get past the Padres 5-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Dodger bullpen blew Game 1 of this series but the Dodgers responded by winning the final three games of this series. The series was crippling to the Padres chances for an NL West crown as they fall 14 games back of the Dodgers in the loss column with 26 games remaining.

Justin Turner:

It was a two hit game for Turner on Sunday as he moves his batting average up to .290 with 15 homers and 52 RBIs. He had been in a 2 for 14 slump entering Sunday.

A.J. Ellis:

Ellis has been relegated to the backup catcher after an awful 2013 season at the plate. Ellis had two hits on Sunday for the third time in his past five games.

Adrian Gonzalez:

Gonzales got a hit with two RBIs on Sunday. He had been on a 3 for 19 slump as he entered Sunday’s game.

Brett Anderson:

The LA left handed starter went 5 2/3rd innings on Sunday giving up one earned run and four hits but walked four batters.
