It was in early March that Jason Day admitted calling up his friend and former world # 1 Tiger Woods to ask him for some tips on how he managed to dominate consistently during his reign. Whatever Tiger’s advice gave to the Aussie seems to be working quite well, as he will soon become the new world # 1 this week in the new PGA Tour rankings.
What’s more impressive is that this victory comes only one week after his wire-to-wire win at the prestigious Arnold Palmer Invitational. He’s also been battling a ongoing back pain, which are obviously are inevitable for most golfers on the Tour but to defeat Rory McIlroy and Louis Oosthuizen the way he did on Sunday to claim his 2nd career match play title is something else. Day needed to get his 18 holes to best the 3rd ranked McIlroy in another of their classic battles but dominated Oosthuizen 5 & 4 in the final round.
The Golf world knows that his short game has tremendously improved and has been helping him save a lot of time. Just a few weeks ago, Day was answering questions about his early season slump but took a few months off following the President’s Cup to really get prepped.
He really looks unstoppable right now and his win this past weekend was his 6th in the last 13 starts worldwide, a streak that includes his 1st major championship last fall.
He won’t be playing this week in Houston and his run entering the Masters will match none other than Tiger Woods.
