Former number one Luke Donald replaces Jaco van Zyl at the Open
Former number one Luke Donald will be part of the British Open, which will be presented at the Royal Troon next week. He will be replacing Jaco van Zyl. The Royal & Ancient (R&A), the organisation who sets up the Open, made the announcement on Wednesday without giving up the reason of van Zyl’s withdraw. Donald slid all the way down to the 83rd spot on the PGA world ranking. It was four years ago that he held the higher echelon of the rankings. Last time that he partook in a round of golf on the greens of the Royal Troons, it was back in 2004 British Open. Donald had missed the cut back then.
In further news, former champion Stewart Cink bowed out of the competition. The R&A didn’t clarify the nature of his withdraw though. The 2009 British Open champion disclosed in spring that his wife, Lisa, was fighting breast cancer. He participated to two tournaments in the past three month. Cink was replaced by Daniel Summerlay, who climbed in the rankings in virtue of his eight position at the U.S. Open. The current rankings is used to establish the list of reservist available for the British Open. Cink triumphed in the tie breaker against 59 year-old veteran Tom Watson at Turnberry.
Cink is the fourth golfer to withdraw from the tournament after Billy Hurley III , Tiger Woods and van Zyl. Hurley III will miss it because of his sister’s wedding, and Woods due to injury.
The British Open gets in gear July 14th.
