Starting Lineup The Cavaliers spent Wednesday night building on their five-game tear to kick off the new year, beating the Washington Wizards on the road, 121-115. The team’s starters seemed unstoppable, with LeBron James and Kyrie Irving combining for 66 points. James added 10 boards for the double-double and went 12-for-22 from the field. Irving has been in the zone since returning from injury in December, posting 32 point on Wednesday and is averaging 17.4 points since his comeback. J.R. Smith contributed 25 points and five three-pointers as Cleveland looks to have a lock on first place in the Eastern Conference for the foreseeable future. The team plays six of their next seven games away from Quicken Loans Arena where they own a somewhat pedestrian 9-8 record.

The promising Timberwolves are looking towards a bright future, as their present is anything but inspiring on the back of eight out of nine losses and four defeats in a row. Minnesota lost 78-74 at home to the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday, falling to 5-14 at Target Center. Still, flashes were on display for the team that Wolves fans hope will develop into a winning formula in years to come, as Karl-Anthony Towns led the tam in scoring with a 14-point, 14-rebound double-double. Andrew Wiggins added 11 points, shooting 4-for-14 from the paint. The team made only three long range shots all game, and find themselves in a freefall in the West (where they sit in 13th place) after losing earlier in the week on the road to the woeful Philadelphia 76ers.
