The Kansas City Royals hold a 12 game lead in the loss column over the Minnesota Twins as they began play on Sunday. The team is fourth in the league in team batting at .269 season to date. They faced the Tigers in a three game series last week with Detroit winning two of the three games. KC relies heavily on their bullpen as the Royals starting pitching staff ranks 28th in the league with 45 quality starts.

The Detroit Tigers dropped two of three over the weekend to the Boston Red Sox to fall to 54-57 season to date. Through Saturday night the Tigers were still in the hunt for a Wildcard spot just five games back of the LA Angels who hold the last spot. The Tigers have hit the ball very well this year ranking first in team batting (.274) and fifth in runs per game (4.43). The pitching has not been good this year. The Detroit pitching staff is 26th in the league from Team ERA (4.48) as well as 25th in WHIP (1.36).
